OVERVIEW: Art Basel, Hong Kong
23 - 26 May, 2013
Following on from the previous incarnation of Art Hong Kong, the inaugural edition of Art Basel Hong Kong was an absolute triumph. Attending for the 3rd consecutive year, I was struck by how dynamic and fresh the Australian contingent at the fair was. The fabulous Murray White Room Gallery from Melbourne curated a beautiful selection of key artists from their stable. Worthy of a special mention are Richard Giblett with his scale model sculpture of the Chanel boutique on Rodeo Drive as well as Polly Borland's photographic portraits of Queen Elizabeth and Nick Cave.
Juan Ford, shown exclusively at the fair by Diane Tanzer, completely sold out his stunningly arresting images of bound Australian eucalyptus foliage, displayed in a most imaginative installation. He was literally stunned at the response and genuine enthusiasm for his work.
Sullivan + Strumpf yet again proved they can mix it with the best overseas with their presentation of ceramics by Penny Byrne. The series, titled iPROTEST, commented and reflected on political trouble spots around the world. This was an ambitious choice, given their previous sell out Hong Kong fairs for contemporary art collector favourites, Sam Leach and Alex Seton, as this piece would be ideal for a museum collection.
As one would expect, there was just as much wheeling and dealing in the VIP lounge as there was on the fair floor and the Australians were often heard and seen nearest to the bar!
It's incredible to see Hong Kong come alive with art and special events over these few short days, I can only anticipate how they can top this in 2014...
